I speak… my TRUTH and it is liberating!

Vishuddha Chakra
The original Sanskrit name for the Throat Chakra is ‘Vishuddha’ meaning ‘purification’ or ‘cleansing’. The Throat Chakra is depicted as a sixteen leafed lotus flower containing an inverted triangle that represents speech and in turn contains a full moon. This chakra is situated between the third and fifth neck vertebra and opens towards the throat. The fifth chakra corresponds with the thyroid and parathyroid in the endocrine system. The Throat chakra is the centre of communication, speech, but hearing and listening are also controlled by this centre. The life lesson thought by this chakra is self-expression and the power of choice.

When the Vishuddha Chakra, or the Throat Chakra, gets blocked it affects the ability to communicate as there is a literal “lump in the throat”. It creates a confusion about who you are and what your true purpose (dharma) really is. A blocked fifth Chakra leads to timidity, a fear of speaking up, and sometimes manipulative behaviour. Half-truths or untruths may be spoken to repress their inner dissatisfaction rather than speaking up for themselves. Creative impulses are suppressed as ideas do not move through the lower chakras where they are made into reality.
When your Vishuddha Chakra is balanced you will find no problem in expressing yourself. The voice of such a person will be rhythmic and resonant, clear with precise expression. You can offer good advice to people as you live in the present. Your ability to take decisions makes it easy for you to follow your dreams. Such people are creative musically or artistically and they find it easy to express the truth. They understand spirituality and can experience divine energy.
When the Vishuddha Chakra is overactive, the voice of the individual would be shrill and loud. They will often interrupt any conversations. They are likely to be over-opinionated and critical of others and shout even when not necessary. They are bad listeners and are not in touch with their feelings. They intellectualize and analyse to avoid the vulnerability of feelings. Other signs include the inability to keep promises, compulsive lying or even gossiping.
When the Vishuddha Chakra is underactive, one will find it difficult to express himself. They are shy and feel safe in their comfort zone, and are often mumbling and whiney. They can’t initiate a conversation and think they don’t have the right to ask a question. They can’t express their emotions and have difficult in telling the truth and being honest with themselves.

Preparing Ground for Communication

Before you begin to communicate prepare the necessary ground for it as the other person may be in his or her own world and may not be in a position to pay heed to you.

Learn to Listen

Listening is an important part of communication. In our anxiety to communicate our point we don’t listen to the other person.

First learn to Hear

Yes, you’ve stopped talking but your head is full the things you want to say. Stop. Take a pause and force yourself to first hear what the other person is saying.

Wait for the Other to Finish

Let the other person finish speaking before you start talking. Also, speak in complete sentences as the other person may start talking when you take a pause.

Don’t try too Hard to Convince

To convince the other you need faith in yourself and what you say. Speak from your heart and it will reach the heart of the other.

Understand the Person You Speak to

Know the person you are talking to, his background, experiences and his upbringing to communicate effectively. Avoid uncomfortable topics and speak only what’s necessary.

Look into the Eyes and show Trust

Looking into the eyes of the person you’re talking to conveys trust. Have trust in yourself first, and then in the other person.

Honour your Commitment

You honour your words and your commitment when your actions follow your words. Do not go back on your words at any cost.

Remove Emotions from your Speech

To communicate effectively remove anger, hurt, frustration, helplessness and ego from your speech. Emotions change the course of your communication.

Say the Truth

Easier said than done, but learn to say the truth. This will save complication in the future, both for you and the other person.

If you Believe that

  • I have a hard time saying what I think and feel.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Stop comparing yourself with others as there will always be someone who is better or lesser than you. Instead of wasting your time in all this you should be working on what is not working for you. Jealousy also creates negativity inside you and around you. In reality we have many wants or desires but few true needs. So, learn to be content. You being unhappy about others getting something won’t help you get it.

Express Yourself

You fear expressing yourself because you think others will reject you or they will get hurt. This leads to fear of public speaking, fear of sharing opinion with others and expressing one’s talent. Remember that you are unique and your unique talent needs to be expressed in society.

Remove the Fear of Being Misunderstood

Fear of being misunderstood arises when you doubt the other person, leading to communication problems. Many times the other person does not seem to listen to you because he or she is not able to understand you. Hence, to maintain communication and to be understood you need to trust.

Releasing Dependency

Communication happens between equals. If you feel lesser or higher than the other due to dependency, you cannot communicate. So take all unions as partnerships and learn to honour your right to speak, hear and be heard.
